Everything you wanted to know about India's 3G spectrum auction

19 May

It took 34 days and 183 rounds of intense bidding to complete the first-ever e-auction of telecom spectrum in India. The results are stunning – the price for a Pan-India 3G spectrum slot hit Rs 16,750.58 crore from a base price of Rs 3,500 crore, the governement will make almost Rs 70,000 crore from 3G spectrum auction alone, almost double of its initial estimate of Rs 35,000 crore from both 3G and Broadband Wireless Access spectrum auctions.

However, the results, which were posted on the Department of Telecom’s website an hour ago, indicate that no carrier has won airwaves for all the 22 circles. None of these seven operators (Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices, STel and Idea) which participated in 3G spectrum auction will have a pan-India 3G presence. The maximum number of circles which the operators have been able to bag is 13 and those operators are – Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Aircel.

According to the report, Bharti Airtel has spent a whopping amount of Rs 12,295.46 crore to obtain airwaves in 13 circles whereas Aircel and Reliance Communications have spent much lesser amount of Rs 6,499.46 crore and Rs 8,585.04 crore, respectively. The reason behind this difference is the choice of circles that the three carriers opted to bid for. Each circle had a different provisional bidding price which increased with the proceedings of the 3G auction process.

Check out the list that we’ve prepared for each carrier for you to understand how much each carrier has spent to create its presence in the circles allotted to them.
