Bharti starts selling cellphones in India

21 Sep

Remember Beetel landline instruments? Well now, you will get to see Beetel mobile phones. Beetel Teletech, a company of Bharti Enterprises Group, has launched 2G and 3G mobile phones which will be available in India across 4,000 retail outlets across Delhi, Haryana, U.P, Uttaranchal, Punjab, Rajasthan and a few North-Eastern States.

Beetel, just like other homegrown handset vendors, has launched its product line at super-affordable prices. The handsets are priced between Rs 1,750 and Rs 7,000. Though its quite ironic that the company has launched its product line but strangely, there are no official pictures or the tech specs of its mobile phones available as yet. However, from whatever we could comprehend from the scanty details mentioned in the press release:

1.  Some phones in the range are dual-SIM while some are triple SIM handsets (GSM+GSM+CDMA).
2. There will be at least one gaming device in the range sporting a QWERTY form factor.
3. Social networking apps like Facebook and Nimbuzz, Opera Mini browser and a free SMS sending service by Ibibo will be pre-installed in the handsets.

Stay tuned in for the official pictures and the technical specifications.

Acer launches the Liquid E Ferrari special edition smartphone in India

15 Sep

Acer has launched the liquidE Ferrari limited edition smartphone in India based on the Android 2.1 aka Eclair. The device looks exactly like its former version – the Acer Liquid, but this time, the phone does not have that old plasticky feel to it. They have used the carbon fibre material in this limited edition phone (yeah, the same material used in cars) to give you that same feeling when you touch a car.

While it sports Ferrari’s prancing horse on its hood, the phone has an underclocked Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 768 MHz. The phone sports a 3.5 inch display, 5.0 MP camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS and comes preloaded with Facebook and Twitter apps. It comes with an inbuilt memory of 512 MB which is expandable up to 8 GB with a microSD card.

Being a special edition device, the phone offers Formula1 theme content like wallpapers, screensavers, ringtones and widgets. Acer is also promising an Android 2.2 upgrade in a couple of months. The smartphone will be available at Chroma outlets for Rs 29,999.

Samsung launches touchscreen phone at Rs 4,000

28 Jul

Our friends at FoneArena are reporting that Samsung Champ, an entry-level touchscreen phone is now available in India for approximately Rs 4,000. The Champ has a 2.4 inch touchscreen, a 1.3 MP camera, FM radio and music player, video player, Bluetooth 2.1 A2DP and a 3.5 mm audio headset jack. It has a 1,000 mAh battery, which Samsung claims is good enough for 12 hours of talktime.

The Champ is Samsung’s reaction to homegrown brands like Micromax, Karbonn and others, which have for long provided touchscreen phones at dirt cheap prices. We expect a few more touchscreen phones at similar price points from Samsung before the end of the year. Such phones will certainly hit Samsung’s margins apart from the risk of cannibalising its popular Corby series of phones. However, phones like the Champ will give Samsung some arsenal to keep homegrown brands at bay and also increase its market share in India at the expense of Nokia, which has been slow to react to changes in the market, both in terms of user expectations and competition from local brands.

Fly Mobiles launches DS160, dual-SIM phone with 30 day battery back-up

26 Jul

Fly Mobiles has announced its latest dual-SIM multimedia phone – the DS160, which will offer a battery back-up time of 30 days. The Fly DS60, just like Zen Mobiles’ M25, is also promising to its users a talk-time of 16 hours. The handset is priced reasonably at Rs 3,299.

The Fly DS160 features a 1.6 inch TFT display, a VGA camera, video player, video recorder, MP3 player, 3.5 mm audio jack, FM radio, FM recorder and other connectivity features like GPRS and Bluetooth. The inbuilt storage capacity of the phone can also be upgraded up to 8 GB with a microSD card.

These dual-SIM phones, which seem to be made for India are giving tough competition to established global handset vendors not only in terms of their aggressive pricing but even features.
