BWA spectrum auction ends, Infotel wins pan-India licence

11 Jun

After 16 days of bidding for the BWA spectrum licence, the auctions have ended today and the government is expected to raise approx Rs 38,540 crore from the sale of pan-India BWA spectrum. The total revenue that the government will rake-in together from the sale of BWA and 3G licence is nearly Rs 1.05 lakh crore.

Bharti Airtel, Reliance WiMax, Idea Cellular, Aircel, Augere Mauritius Ltd, Infotel Broadband Services, Qualcomm, Spice Internet Service Provider, Tata Communications Internet Services, Tikona Digital Networks and Vodafone Essar had participated in the BWA auctions. But unlike 3G auctions where no single carrier could get hold of a pan-India 3G licence, Infotel has won a pan-India BWA licence for Rs 12,847.77 crore. The company is a venture of HFCL Group and was launched in Punjab in 2000. Infotel offers solutions for fixed line telephony (telephone services), mobile telephony, broadband services, customized data services and VAS.

Shockingly out of these 11 companies, 5 companies – Reliance WiMax, Idea Cellular, Spice Internet Service Provider, Tata Communications and Vodafone Essar did not get BWA licence for even a single circle.

State owned operators – BSNL and MTNL, had received their share of BWA spectrum earlier from the government. Since these operators did not pay anything when they had received the spectrum, they are now liable to pay the same amount that shall be paid by other private operators.

To know more on which operator will be present in which circle and how much are each of these operators are entitled to pay to the government, check out the table below:

India's 3G spectrum auction Day One update

9 Apr

The auction of 3G spectrum begun today in India and has witnessed competitive bidding from carriers for most of the 22 circles for which 3G spectrum is being auctioned. At the end of day one, five rounds of bidding were completed with circles Delhi emerging as the most expensive circle with the winning bid of Rs 373.29 crores at the end of the fifth round. Delhi has spectrum for three private carriers and there are only three carriers bidding successfully at the moment. The bid price for Delhi will increase by 3.73 crore in the next round.

While some circles like Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, have one excess bidder than for which the spectrum is available, there are others like Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Orissa and North East, among others, that do not have enough bidders. No one, at the moment, is bidding for Orissa.

This picture might change when the bidding approaches its final stages for key circles, when the bidders will get a better idea of the cost of spectrum acquisition in these circles, and then they might bid for the circles where there seems to be no demand at the moment.

The Department of Telecommunications has not revealed the names of who’s bidding for which circles but has released the status of the auction, which can be seen here. Nine carriers were in the fray for 3G auctions – Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Aircel, Etisalat, S Tel and Videocon Telecommunications. Of these, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices, Idea Cellular and Aircel were bidding for a Pan-India 3G license while the rest were interested in certain circles.

9 Mar

At a time when every handset vendor has launched or is planning to launch an application store of its own, carriers around the world were feeling left out. So at MWC earlier last month, 24 International carriers announced their plans to create a wholesale platform called ‘Wholesale Applications Community’ for launching mobile application stores. Even Indian service providers such as Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Vodafone Essar and RCom have joined the league, with each one of them launching their respective app stores almost at the same time.

‘Vodafone Mobile Application store’ has got more than 800 apps and has also reported up-to 10,000 downloads in a time span of 20 days. Users can find apps based on categories such as entertainment, utility, finance, social networking and games. To use the Vodafone Mobile Application Store, subscribers need to send ‘APP’ to 111 (toll free) to get the URL. The store can also be accessed through Vodafone Live! Be prepared to shop a majority of apps since only 15 per cent of the apps are free of cost. The cost of the apps might range between Rs 5 to Rs 30.

‘Airtel App Central’ is launched with more than 1,250 apps. The store will provide you with free-apps and paid-apps (prices starting from Rs 5). Airtel App Central can be browsed via Airtel Live. Airtel subscribers can also SMS ‘app’ to 54321 (toll free) to receive the URL.

The exact number of apps on ‘Reliance Applications Store’ is not known but it can be accessed via RWorld, allowing its subscribers to browse and download apps (paid and free).

‘Idea Application Store’ has been launched in association with Spice Digital. Users can download applications through the GPRS/WAP home page.

Aircel’s mobile app store Flypp, will be also launched in a few months.
