After Antennagate, is Glassgate next for iPhone 4?

8 Oct

The iPhone 4 seems to be jinxed for Apple. After fielding issues related to its ‘revolutionary’ antenna, it now seems that a few specs of dust might be able to crack the rear glass panel of the phone. GDGT reports that this can happen to users who ‘protect’ their iPhone 4 with a slip-on case. Now the thing about a slip-on case is it shields not only the side of the phone (the culprit behind the ‘grip of death’) but it also protects the back. But as we all have experienced, some tiny particulates do find their way inside and get sandwiched between the rear panel of the phone and the internal lining of the case.

GDGT reports that internally, Apple engineers have learnt that these particulates can scratch the iPhone 4’s rear glass panel, which eventually develop into full-blown cracks! While we have not seen this happen to any iPhone 4 but if it does, Apple will have to bend over backwards and appease agitated customers. I won’t blame them, considering they have spent a fortune buying the iPhone 4 (don’t forget the hours spent waiting in a queue or the days spent waiting out of the window waiting for the FedEx guy to arrive).

I’m not sure how Apple would wriggle out of this one but what I’m sure about is that next year’s iPhone will look a lot different than the iPhone 4.

Nokia N8 launching on September 20?

17 Aug

Many of our readers are looking forward to Nokia’s N8 smartphone for its 12.0 MP camera and new UI. Nokia has not announced the launch date for the phone that would decide the future of Symbian, but we have known for a long time that it will be sometime in September. Now, UK’s online retailer, Expansys, has come up with a date – September 20. We have a feeling that the India launch of the N8 should be before that, but at least we know it won’t be later than September 20!

We will keep our eyes peeled for more clues and official info about the N8 launch in India.

Sony Ericsson's PlayStation phone plans get detailed

12 Aug

Sony Ericsson PSP Android phoneEngadget is claiming to have been briefed by one of its sources about Sony Ericsson developing a gaming Android smartphone that might get the PlayStation branding – something that gamers worldwide have been begging for. The PS Phone will run on Android 3.0 aka Gingerbread and will have a 3.7-4.1-inch touchscreen and a slide-out gaming pad. Rather than having a joystick, the device will have a big touchpad. Probably, with this phone, Android will finally see some rich games and gaming experience. You can check out more details of this phone by heading over to Engadget.

We have all reasons to believe that Google would be closely involved in this project. In our opinion, Google will not showcase Android 3.1 aka Gingerbread on the Nexus One. Instead it will demonstrate it on a variety of devices, which would include this gaming phone from Sony Ericsson and an Internet Tablet from Motorola.

Moto to launch a 10-inch Android tablet, dual SIM phones?

7 Aug

We have just learnt from one of our connects that Motorola indeed has a 10-inch Android tablet in the works and it will run on Android 3.0 aka Gingerbread. The tablet, referred to as the M-Pad (very unlikely to be the final name), will also have a camera but he was not sure about its megapixel count or whether it would have a front facing one for video calls. The M-pad will be announced in the October-November time frame. We have heard murmurings about such a device in the works from other sources in the past.

The most interesting tid bit that we learnt today was Moto’s plans to launch dual-SIM phones in India pretty soon. One of the dual-SIM phones is expected to have a QWERTY keypad, which would compete with similar offerings from virtually every local player out here.

On the Android smartphone front, after the recent launch of the Milestone XT720 and Backflip, we can expect to see the Flipout (watch the video below). Also in the pipeline seems to be a smartphone in candybar form factor with an alphanumeric keypad. We ain’t sure what this could be as there is no such device in Motorola’s present or upcoming portfolio that we know about.

Motorola to launch a 10-inch Internet Tablet running Android Gingerbread in November?

27 Jul

Motorola is expected to launch an Android-based Internet Tablet with a 10-inch display during the holiday season this year, according to The Street, which is quoting analyst Ashok Kumar, who has a history of big misses and some hits. While Motorola’s ambitions to launch an Internet Tablet does not surprise us, what is shocking in the report is that this device would be running on the next version of Android, codenamed Gingerbread.

It is already the end of July and we are yet to see devices running Android 2.1 aka Froyo and this speculation that Gingerbread might come on a device in about four months from now will only increase confusion and fragmentation of the OS.

Imagine this – consumers are still trying to figure out whether their Android phones running on Android 2.1 would get a Froyo update or not. Considering that there are no Android 2.2 devices available in the market, new buyers will now not only have to decide a new phone on the basis of whether it will get a Froyo update but also consider whether their spanking new phone will become outdated in less than six months with a new version of Android.

Rumour: Motorola set to launch XT720 in India?

13 Jul

Motorola Milestone XT720 India launchAfter the Milestone, Motorola is apparently planning to introduce the XT720 Android multimedia monster in India. The XT720, which will compete with the recently introduced Samsung Galaxy S and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, has the same 3.7 inch, 480×854 pixel display as the Milestone but has an 8.0 MP camera with Xenon flash that can shoot videos at 720p HD and supports HDMI out. The XT720 is expected to be launched for Rs 30,000 in India very soon. The detailed specifications of the Milestone XT720.

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9200?

5 Jul

Is this what the next version of the Galaxy S would look like? If some Russian sites are to be believed then this could be the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9200. We suspect this picture to be a fake render but the specs definitely look tempting. They are talking about a 4.3 inch 1280×720 pixel display, a 2.0 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM/4 GB ROM, 32 GB internal memory and an 8.0 MP camera with full HD (1020p?) video recording! And if you could not figure out by the specs, this one would run on Android 3.0 aka Gingerbread.

We will classify this one as a big rumour than a leak for the time being while we dig for more information.
