Samsung discontinues Galaxy S in India to make way for Nexus S?

28 Dec

One of the most popular Android smartphones in India, the Samsung Galaxy S, has been discontinued according to multiple dealers. We checked in Delhi and multiple dealers claim that the phone is out of stock and Samsung has discontinued the product. We have been able to confirm through secondary sources that a similar situation exists in Bangalore.

It sounds unreal as the Galaxy S is Samsung’s flagship Android smartphone and has been quite popular with consumers. Even the dealers we spoke to sounded frustrated as they still get customers asking for the Galaxy S. Meanwhile, Samsung claims that it has already shipped over 9.3 million units of the smartphone globally, marginally short of its target of doing 10 million units by the end of 2010. (Who knows, it might be able to achieve it thanks to the Holiday shopping spree across Europe and the US.)

Coming back to the Galaxy S story in India, could it be that Samsung is now preparing to launch the Nexus S in India? We know for sure that Samsung has plans to launch the Nexus S in India but not even in our wildest dreams did we imagine that it could be this early.

Before some of our “admirers” jump the gun and call this story fake, we are not making any claims when Samsung would launch the Nexus S over here. We are just trying to put things into perspective and giving a likely possible scenario.

Our hat tip to our good ol’ friend Tushar for sharing the situation in Bangalore. Don’t forget to share with us in the comments if your friendly neighbourhood cellphone retailer is also claiming that the Galaxy S has been discontinued.

What crap news! Stop spreading false news about
    Samsung!

      Hi Manish,

If the Galaxy S hasn’t been discontinued, then Samsung should do a better job of informing their key dealers. According to what we have learnt from multiple dealers in Delhi and Bangalore, no new stocks of the Galaxy S are coming and they have been specifically told by the distributor that the phone has been discontinued.

      Go figure!

release by mid february for Rs.24000, that’s cheaper than Galaxy S

Yep Guys, I too tried to purchase Galaxy S and most of the
dealers in Bangalore have told me that it has been discontinued in
India becoz samsung is launching Nexus S. Also,Nexus-S seems to me
to be much more of a crap just because it has only 16GB memory(no
expandable memory provided.I dont know whts the purpose of Samsung
here really) although it is powered with additional hardware
support compared to Galaxy-S. If anyone thinks that this is
false, please post in the phone no of any of the dealers residing in
Bangalore selling Galaxy-S Thanks in advance Anish

      adv:

      nfc
2.3 gingerbread(and it is been introduced in the market to overcome and fullfill the drawback of galaxy s nothing apart each phone has diff drawbacks)

The Nexus S is not a crap phone, I fan guarantee you that, and 16gb is more than enough for most users, you dont hear people saying iphone is crappy cos it doesnt have expandable memory so why the Nexus S? I know the phone has some features less as compared to Galaxy S like TV output is not there, bluetooth v.3 is not there and no radio, but these features barely matter, it has features like LED Flash and android 2.3 which are more required, and what most people fail to notice is that Galaxy S will not get updated to newer versions of android until samsung does not release an official update of its own but Nexus S will always get updates as soon as google launches one(remember even Nexus One got the android 2.3 update?) and the next update of android will be in march, android 3.0 honeycomb, which will be availible to Nexus S but may not be availible to Galaxy S

  9. Gaurav Mirchandani January 4, 2011 at 8:33 pm #

The discontinuation of Galaxy S in India and Malaysia is just a marketing strategy, samsung has done it only so that people buy Nexus S, the phone will definitely be back in India post 4-6 months of Nexus S’s release at a lower price, those of you who are patient enough can wait for sometime, and the impatient one’s like me can buy Nexus S πŸ˜€

    • Anish January 5, 2011 at 3:37 pm #

u can buy it from ebay..Like me..Im also one of the impatient guys like u πŸ˜€

Been tryin to buy a galaxy myself. Don’t bout u guys but i didn’t stop at what the retailers had to say. So decided to call up the samsung sales office. They said that samsung was running short of the s-amoled screens worldwide which had sent inventories for a toss and so the galaxy would be back in store by end of Jan. Don’t know whom to trust…………………….
Btw the s-amoled inventory story is actually a fact, although can’t say if thats effecting galaxy stocks.

    • Gaurav Mirchandani January 5, 2011 at 4:16 pm #

Man I would love it if the Galaxy S was back! πŸ˜€

I’ve been trying to buy Galaxy S from Chennai. All the retailers are out of stock and a few mentioned that it had been stopped. Any confirmation on the actual release date of Nexus S?

    • Anish January 6, 2011 at 5:38 pm #

@Naveen : Most probably by the end of Jan or the mid of Feb

Rather u can go for Galaxy-S itself (online from e-Bay)

  13. Amit January 7, 2011 at 8:37 pm #

People it is confirmed, Samsung has discontinued Galaxy S.

I have been trying all retail and privilege partner outlets, I had to returned with disappointment,.

failed from all corners, i called up Samsung Flagship store in Vile Parle (mumbai), they said Samsung is coming up wit Nexus so they decided to remove Galaxy S models frmo all outlets..

  14. vinod January 10, 2011 at 6:48 pm #

@ABOVE all i dont think AMOLED is gonna be unavailability , if so there will be NO GALAXY ‘S MOBILE will be there around the world (online, overseas ) and also samsung windows7 mobile ,nexus’s,4g epic all got super amoled ,how come these product available in the market all around if it is unavailability of super amoled means there should not be any of the galaxys has not to be there all around the world why come only in india and how come online store has the product and not the delears of shop (that too all in a fraction in demand and not even 1 product is available in the indian market ) very strange and something they are planning ????

  15. vinod January 10, 2011 at 7:12 pm #

I checked with various stores in Bangalore. Most of the Samsung dealers told about the amoled screen unavailability and also told that it will be available again in Feb. No one could however told when Nexus S will be released. I am waiting till 1st week of Feb unless I get it from one of the stores who has promised to get me one piece in a week’s time. If any one gets to know the release date for Nexus S in India, please update this post

    • Shubhojit January 11, 2011 at 2:24 pm #

Nexus S is expected in India by Q1 2011. But i guess it could get extended upto April or beyond.

Its a good news for me. No matter how much I loved Samsung Galaxy S hardware, I really hated the slow OS updates.

Samsung said Gingerbread will be coming to Galaxy S .. yeah right in 2013.

Will get Nexus S as soon as its released. The only thing that I would miss is the expandable memory slot, but thats ok.

  20. Arijit January 13, 2011 at 6:20 pm #

From end of November I am keeping eye on nexus s. after its release in USA I tried to buy it. After that I decided to hold some time. You guys are telling that it’s coming. I will be the first one to buy it. But still now I have doubt as we all know the nexus one took forever to come to our country.

    @vinod
I am also from Chennai, but I didn’t check in stores. I will be glad if u give us updates like this. Thanks man for the info

I had visited almost all the retailers and showrooms in trivandarum, kochi, thirur, palakkad only to be told “no stock”. I was told that Galaxy S wasnt available in entire Kerala. So i decided to check out TN for my next round. Went to stores in coimbatore and chennai where i was informed Galaxy S had been discontinued due to battery complaints. I wished that it wasnt true. But i am yet to get a Galaxy S after 2months. Next city on my list is Bangalore. But from the comments above, seems its not available there too. Maybe i should try Kolkatta.

God, i need a new phone with minimum 1GHz, touchscreen, Android, 5MP+camera, HD video recording. Sleek and sexy!

Guys I got a news that samsung is going to launch a new phone by the end of jan. Its name is Galaxy s armani. May be for this new phone they discontinues Galaxy S. see this link for detail

They will keep releasing such new phones in US & UK every month. But they will never release them in India. Samsung does not think Indians are supposed to own good products. If one of the model fails there, they will plan to release those models in India. Today Samsung is only busy convincing people to buy Tab in India. What a crap…Even if they release Nexus S in India, don’t think they will sell for 24000. This price is just a conversion of $525 which is the selling price of unlocked Nexus S in US. They can never sell at that price in India. According to Univercell, it may be priced initially at Rs. 38000 when released in India.

  24. Gaurav Mirchandani January 18, 2011 at 6:15 pm #

Firstly, the Georgio Armani Galaxy S is a limited edition phone, it’s not coming to India, secondly, Nexus is no iPhone, it will be within 30000, probably 24000 only, UniverCell sells phones at quite a high price, try places like iconnet, they provode much cheaper prices, I’m currently using samsung star which was being sold for 11k when I bought it and I got it in iconnet for 8k

  25. Arijit January 20, 2011 at 4:17 pm #

guys I got a news that nexus s is comming on feb 2. I got this news from mobile store (chennai OMR road). Dont know whether this is true or not. But they told me that they have news from samsung. I also asked for price. They told it will be arround 30k.

yesterday i called up the flagship store. they informed its discontinued and samasung launching the next version of galxy s i beliebe its some s 1900

  27. Kunal Mudliyar January 29, 2011 at 5:28 pm #

One of the Samsung dealer in pune (baner area) said, “Saab abhi galaxy s band ho gaya, Galaxy S ka 4 G aa raha hai” ( Galaxy S is been discontinued and we are waiting for Galaxy S 4G)

  28. Subhash February 4, 2011 at 4:28 pm #

Samsung is facing shortage of SuperAMOLED screen. So they are going to launch Super LCD based Galaxy S named “Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL”. It will be coming soon. So that’s why it is said that old Galaxy S I9000 is discontinued.
