Vodafone reveals 3G plans for India, to launch HSPA+ network in Q1 2011

21 Oct

Vodafone Essar today announced its plans for launching 3G networks in India. Unlike Tata DoCoMo, which plans to flip the 3G switch on November 5, Vodafone will start offering 3G services only in the first quarter (calendar year) of 2011. According to Sanjoy Mukherjee, operations director for North and East, Vodafone Essar, they want to ensure seamless coverage with good in-home 3G coverage before launching their service. Vodafone has not disclosed any tariff plans for 3G services.

Vodafone won 3G spectrum for 10 circles in an auction that happened earlier this year. It will launch 3G services in all the 10 circles – Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal. However, vodafone is currently talking to other carriers for agreements that would enable it to offer G services in other circles.
