Yahoo! to bring video chatting to iPhone and Android smartphones

9 Oct

Yahoo! is set to launch a version of its instant messaging service, Yahoo! Messenger, for iPhone and Android that will allow making video calls to other Messenger users directly from their smartphones. reports Reuters. The app will take on Apple’s FaceTime, which currently allows iPhone 4/iPod touch users to have video calls over Wi-Fi with other iPhone 4/iPod touch users. Yahoo!’s app, however, would not only enable users to chat with those using Messenger on a PC as well, but it will also work over a 3G connection if the user is not in a Wi-Fi hotspot. Google too, is expected to announce a video calling feature in its GTalk application for Android, later this year or early next year when it rolls-out the Gingerbread update for the mobile operating system.
