Three things that Google might announce tonight for Android

12 Aug

Google has sent out invites to the tech press in the US for a Google Mobile-related announcement today. While no one really knows what the announcement would be (no leaks, yet!) but here are some possibilities that we think based on what Google has shown in the past couple of months. We have a hunch that today’s announcement might not have anything to do with new devices or throwing some vague numbers about the number of Android smartphones getting activated daily (the latter will certainly happen, though). Instead, I think that it will be related to some much-needed improvements for the Android Market.

In all probability, Google will launch the online sync functionality in Android Market. At the moment, you can only downloads Android Market apps directly from your Android device. If you use multiple Android smartphones, you have to download apps on all of them individually. With online sync feature, this will change. You will go to Android Market on a website, login with your Google credentials and browse apps on offer. If you want to download any app, you can just click download there and the app will be downloaded ‘over-the-air’ across all your Android smartphones.

Another feature that Google might introduce today is how you can buy apps. Till now, only Google Checkout users are able to buy apps – a service which is available only in a few countries. Google might announce new payment mechanisms that could include PayPal, carrier billing and even direct credit card billing. Carrier billing is unlikely, but Google might like to introduce it with Verizon, its preferred carrier and the one that has the best Android smartphones around.

Lastly, Google can announce its online music store that would have online streaming capabilities and even stream music to your Android smartphone. We have been very impressed with mSpot, a similar service on which you can upload up to 2 GB of your music for free and stream it on an Android smartphone. If Google announces a similar service, it will also have the facility to buy legit music.

The announcement is just a few hours away so sit tight till you hear more from us.
