Finally, Motorola and Verizon announce the Froyo running Droid2

11 Aug

The first Android 2.2 smartphone (apart from the Nexus One) is finally here. It certainly took a long time coming after we first saw it a couple of months ago, but the successor to the Motorola Droid (known as Milestone outside the US) has been announced, and like the trend these days is called the Droid2.

Featuring a slightly revamped look (more curvaceous, if we may) the Droid2 retains most of the Droid goodness and adds a few much needed improvements. There is a faster 1 GHz processor under the hood and 8 GB of onboard memory along with another 8 GB in the form of a microSD card bundled with the device. The QWERTY keypad has been revamped and sports keys with slight bumps to make typing comfortable, something that many users had complained about with the Droid. The D-pad is gone too, replaced by arrow keys.

What remains the same is the 3.7-inch 480×854 pixel display and the 5.0 MP camera with dual-LED flash. We would have been slightly more happier had they upped stakes in that department too with an 8.0 MP shooter and HD video. But then, that could have cannibalized the Droid X, which was introduced last month and has been sold out on Verizon.

The biggest update, in our opinion, is that it runs Android 2.2 aka Froyo that brings along some new features like the ability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot from the phone’s data connection and Adobe Flash 2.1. However, most phones, the Droid included, will get updated with the new OS and it remains to be seen how big a differentiator that would be for the Droid2. In all probability, Verizon in the US and Motorola in other countries will retire the Droid and hope that the Droid2 will sell on the great success the Droid has been for both Motorola and Verizon.

The Droid2 will be available on pre-sale from August 12 on Verizon for $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a two year contract. Talk plans start from $39.99 and users will be required to subscribe to a data plan that starts at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access.
