Vodafone launches Rs 1,500 solar phone in India

vodafone Rs 1,500 solar phoneVodafone Essar has announced that it will start selling a Rs 1,500 solar-powered phone in India from August. The VF247 comes over a year after Samsung’s Solar Guru phone and boasts of charging in ambient light, which means that the phone will charge the battery even when it is indoors. Vodafone claims that a complete charge will take eight hours of direct sunlight, which will provide up to eight days of standby time or four hours of talktime. The phone package will also have a regular electric charger to charge the phone by plugging it to the mains.

Our experience with phones that come with solar panels (like the Samsung Solar Guru phone) has evoked mixed feelings. While it feels good to be able to charge the phone without drawing juice from the grid, the overall user experience indicates that it is more of a gimmick than anything. The fact that one has to keep the phone in direct sunlight for a couple of hours to be able to make a five minute call is not user friendly at all. We will see if Vodafone’s VF247 changes anything.

Most of the Vodafone ‘Magic Box’ Handsets in India are manufactured by ZTE.
      Not sure about this one.
