After India, UAE warns BlackBerry poses security risks

26 Jul

Earlier this year and even a couple of years ago, the Indian government had posed objections with regards to Research In Motion’s (RIM’s) BlackBerry handhelds and called them a security risks. Now, UAE is going through the same motions and has called BlackBerry and some of its apps a social and security risk.

Like in the case with India, UAE contents that BlackBerry was operating beyond the jurisdiction of national legislation. “As a result of how BlackBerry data is managed and stored, in their current form, certain BlackBerry applications allow people to misuse the service, causing serious social, judicial and national security repercussions,” a Reuters report quotes a statement issued by UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.

RIM has so far managed to dodge the Indian bullet, which wants the company to set up servers in India and to provide transcriptions of data passing through its network in a ‘readable’ format. Will it be able to do the same in the UAE?
