Olivepad – the first Android tablet to be launched in India

Olivepad Android TabletOlive Telecom, the company that had launched the first AAA battery powered phone is grabbing headlines again by announcing the first Android-based Internet tablet to be available in India. Priced at Rs 24,990, the Olivepad has a 7.0 inch TFT WVGA display and runs on Android 2.1 OS. (The official specification sheet claims that it will be upgradeable.)

On the specifications front, the Olivepad is powered by a Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset with an ARM 11 processor clocked at 600 MHz. It has 512 MB of system memory and an equivalent capacity of flash memory that will be utilised for storing apps. It also has a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 32 GB. Considering that it runs on Android 2.1 that does not allow storing apps on external memory, Olivepad users might be crunched for space.

The Olivepad is well-connected with quad-bad GSM, tri-band UMTS (3G), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity options. In fact, one can even make voice calls from it (it has a built-in mic and speaker), though holding a 410 gram device that is almost 180 mm tall against your cheek might not be a wonderful sight.

It also has dual-cameras – a 3.0 MP camera on the front and a VGA camera on the rear. Normally, on a cellphone we find the better camera on the rear. But then it would certainly be awkward to hold the massive thing and click pictures. The cameras are purely for video calling, we reckon.

While we fancy the idea of having an Android-based Internet tablet, we feel a bit let down by the Olivepad. For the same price one can buy a 16 GB Wi-Fi-only version of the iPad, which on any given day would give a better bang for your buck. Also, we feel that it might be a bit under-powered with its 600 MHz processor. Has this thing been priced under Rs 20,000 along with a 3G data subscription plan from one of the carriers, we might have been tempted to pick one up.

I doubt it will have a chance given it will compete with the entry level iPad
