Updated: Lava undoes QWERTY, launches phone with an 'Alpha' keypad

Lava phone with alpha keyboardOf all things that you can accuse ‘Indian cellphone brands,’ one thing that you cannot accuse them is their attempt to innovate. Lava, an Indian cellphone brand, has launched a new phone that features an ‘alpha’ keyboard instead of the regular QWERTY keyboard. Rather than following the popular QWERTY format, the Lava B2 and B5 have their keys laid out in alphabetical order. It might sound obnoxious to most of us, the company claims that there is a huge demand in India for such a keypad considering that there are millions of cellphone users who have never used a PC before. According to Lava, about a million QWERTY keyboard phones are sold in India every month. The B2 is priced at Rs 3,999. The company has not revealed the specifications of the phone and their website page for the phone is still ‘under construction’.

Lava was launched in India 14 months ago and claims that it already has captured 6 per cent of the cellphone market. Like most other ‘Indian brands’, Lava does not have a manufacturing facility and sources its phones from directly from Chinese OEMs. It is also planning to launch 3G-enabled phones later this year when major carriers roll out their 3G networks. It also has a smartphone product in the pipeline. Lava is also looking at international markets and is planning to launch its phones in West Asia next month.
