How to get Android 2.1 update for HTC Hero users in India

2 Jul

HTC is finally rolling out Android 2.1 update for the Hero in India. It is a two-part process where you will first be prompted for a minor update that will update the ‘Firmware Over The Air’ (FOTA) client and then you will be made to wait for some more days to receive the actual update. Now, if you have received the first update and don’t want to wait it out to receive the real thing, you have come to the right place. We will tell you how you can get Android 2.1 running on your HTC Hero right away.

First of all, ensure that you are in a Wi-Fi hotspot with good bandwidth. The firmware update file is 79.6 MB and it took us some four hours to download it. Also, ensure that your phone is completely charged (ideally leave it on charging while the download goes, Wi-Fi can drain the battery pretty quickly). The thing is that for some reason HTC wants you to receive the update on July 10 so the hack is to fool HTC’s server that it’s July 10 already.

To do that, go to Settings>Date and Time> and manually change the date to July 10. Once that’s done, go to Settings>About Phone and you will notice the top most option would be to check for updates. Select that option and hit check now. That should do the trick! It will ask you to download a file, let the file download. Once the download is complete, install the file and the system will do the rest. Voila, you have a HTC Hero running on Android 2.1!
