India’s 3G auction: Day 26 update

11 May

On Monday, the government raked in Rs 13473.55 crore from the auction of pan-India 3G licence. The state was earlier expecting to generate a sum of Rs 35,000 crore from the sale of both 3G and BWA licence. But now, the government anticipates to draw Rs 54,000 crore form the auction of 3G spectrum alone.

After the completion of 148 rounds of 3G spectrum auction, the highest bid of Rs 243.88 crore was recorded for Mumbai this time again, followed by Delhi and Karnataka with bid values of Rs 2372.92 crore and Rs 1402.13 crore respectively. Tamil Nadu occupied the fourth spot with bids valued at Rs 1287.24 crore.

There was no excess demand for three circles- Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka whereas Delhi, Mumbai, Orissa, Punjab, Kolkata and Andhra Pradesh witnessed excess demand on the 26th day of the 3G auction. For circles like Gujarat, Kerala, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and J&K, a few existing bidders backed-off leading to shortage of demand in these circles. The government is expected to close the auctions when there will be no excess demand in any circle.
