Sony Ericsson expands its Walkman family, announces Zylo and Spiro

19 Apr

Carrying forward the legacy of Walkman series, Sony Ericsson has launched two new Walkman phones with social networking capabilities- Zylo and Spiro. These bizarrely named handsets do not bring a breath of fresh air because their repetitive slider designs (D-pad in the centre and keys on left and right) usually seen in the previous Walkman series handsets.

Sony Ericsson’s Spiro might not debut any new feature but the Zylo features FLAC format (best sound quality ever on a mobile phone).

The Zylo sports a 2.6 inch QVGA display, 3.2 MP camera with 2X digital zoom, video recording, Bluetooth, 260 MB of inbuilt memory which is expandable up-to 16 GB with microSD card. Users can stay connected to their online pals with Facebook and Twitter and can also upload photos and videos on Flickr, Picassa and YouTube. Apart from the new FLAC format, the Zylo will also offer the usual Walkman series features such as PlayNow and TrachID. Colour options: Jazz Black, Chacha Silver and Swing Pink

The Spiro has a 2.2 inch QVGA display, a 2.0 MP camera with 2X digital zoom, 3.5 mm audio jack, Bluetooth and 5 MB of internal memory expandable up-to 16 GB with a micro SD card. It also offers TrackID and PlayNow features.

There is no word on pricing as yet but we do know that the handsets are expected to arrive in Q3 this year.

To be honest, both these phones are a step back for Sony Ericsson, which we believe, has done a great job with its Vivaz and XPERIA X10 series of phones. The industrial design of those phones come as a whiff of much-neeed fresh air for Sony Ericsson. Whereas these two Walkman phones bring nothing new to the table – design or features. The Zylo and Spiro would probably enable Sony Ericsson to remain relevant in the sub-Rs 10,000 segment but that space is too crowded for these phones to create a niche for themselves.
