Twitter acquires Tweetie, to make it the official Twitter iPhone app

Twitter has acquired Tweetie, a popular Twitter app on the App Store, according to an announcement made by the company on its official blog. Currently available for $2.99, Twitter will rebrand the app as Twitter for iPhone and make it available for free in the coming weeks.

“Careful analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes AppStore revealed massive room for improvement. People are looking for an app from Twitter, and they’re not finding one. So, they get confused and give up. It’s important that we optimize for user benefit and create an awesome experience,” the company wrote on its blog.

RIM, meanwhile, has launched the beta version its native Twitter app on the App World, though it is not clear at the moment if and how deeply Twitter was involved in its development.

The news won’t be encouraging for the hundreds of third party developers who have developed apps Twitter not only for the iPhone but also on other smartphone platforms like Android and Windows Mobile. Till today’s announcement, Twitter had not developed any mobile app for its services and encouraged users to either go online on a phone’s browser to access a mobile-optimised version of Twitter or download a third party Twitter app, like Tweetie.

Third party Twitter apps have provided far better features than Twitter’s web version like the ability to upload photographs, URL shortners and even send notifications for new Tweets. It remains to be seen if Twitter acquires another company to tap the growing Android user base in the near future.
