Bharti Airtel offers Twitter over SMS

14 Oct

Bharti Airtel today became the first Indian carrier to enable its subscribers to Tweet via SMS. Airtel subscribers can start Tweeting by sending an SMS with the keyword START to 53000.

While sending Tweets via SMS won’t be free (at the moment, we don’t know if it will be treated as a premium text message that normally costs Rs 3) but receiving updates over SMS will be free of cost.

The tie-up is a perfect example of how web-based services can be made mass market by tweaking them to work through a non-data gateway. And this statement from Twitter’s announcement sums it up perfectly:

“There are over one billion people with internet access on the planet but there are more than four billion people with mobile phones and Twitter can work on all of them because even the simplest of these devices feature SMS.”

We believe that other carriers will follow with similar offerings in the coming days and of course, we’ll keep our eyes peeled to keep you updated.
